Planar TVF Series P1.5 — cabinet grid & viewing distance

Problem. A controlled indoor environment wants a 4 x 2.25 m (16:9) video wall built from Planar TVF Series P1.5 cabinets, and needs to know how many cabinets are needed, what the actual finished wall size will be, and how close viewers can sit before pixel structure becomes visible.

Answer. At 1.56 mm pixel pitch, a 4 x 2.25 m target resolves to a 7 x 7 cabinet grid, giving an actual wall of 4.2 x 2.36 m and a native resolution of 2688 x 1512 (approximately 4.1 MP). The optimal viewing band for video content on this pitch is roughly 1.6-3.1 m, with the preset default closest-seat distance set to 3 m.

How this preset reads — the engineering view.

Pixel pitch is the single number that drives everything else in this preset. At 1.56 mm, the calculator resolves the 4 x 2.25 m target into a 7 x 7 cabinet grid, and the same 1.56 mm figure sets the optimal viewing band for video content at roughly 1.6-3.1 m (pitch x 1.0 to pitch x 2.0). Seat viewers any closer than about 1.6 m and individual pixels start to separate visually; push them past 3.1 m and the wall is under-resolved for its size.

800 nits is a controlled-indoor brightness figure — comfortable for a lobby, boardroom, control room or similar space without direct sun or bright competing light sources, not a daylight or semi-outdoor rating. The cabinet is wall-mount with front-service access, which matters when the installation has no rear void to walk into for maintenance. Native resolution at this preset's wall size is 2688 x 1512 (about 4.1 MP), which suits video, digital signage and control-room content comfortably; it is close to but not exactly a broadcast 4K standard, which matters if content is mastered at a fixed resolution.

To use the calculator, drag the wall width and height sliders and watch the cabinet grid and native resolution recompute in real time. Cabinets are whole units, so the calculator snaps the grid to the nearest full cabinet count — the actual finished wall (4.2 x 2.36 m in this preset) may differ slightly from whatever target size you set, and that's expected behaviour rather than an error.

The calculator does not decide structural or rigging load capacity, power and data cable run lengths, the video processor or scaler needed to feed the wall, how source content resolution maps onto the native 2688 x 1512 panel, or ambient-light calibration for the room the wall sits in. Each of those is a separate engineering decision that follows once the cabinet grid and viewing geometry are set.

What this preset deliberately does not solve

  • Native resolution and cabinet count are geometry-only outputs; they do not account for bezel-free seam tolerance or on-site squareness of the mounting structure.
  • The 1.6-3.1 m viewing band is a general pitch-to-distance guideline, not a substitute for an on-site sightline check against actual seating or standing positions.
  • 800 nits assumes a controlled indoor environment; a room with strong ambient light or glass frontage needs a separate brightness review before this cabinet is confirmed.

How this preset differs from its siblings

Planar TVF Series P1.5 sits at a finer pitch than many fine-pitch indoor products used for lobby or signage walls at larger sizes, which changes both the optimal viewing distance (closer, since pitch is smaller) and the cabinet count needed for a given wall area. Its 800 nits and front-service, wall-mount profile also position it for controlled indoor spaces with front-only maintenance access, rather than higher-brightness or rear-serviceable lines built for larger venues or brighter rooms. This preset exists separately because the pitch, brightness and service-access combination changes the sizing math and the viewing-distance guidance a visitor would get from a generic fine-pitch indoor preset.
