K-array Vyper KV102 II — SPL & coverage
Problem. A 30 x 18 m conference auditorium needs speech-priority coverage that reaches the back rows without spraying sound onto the ceiling or side walls. The Vyper KV102 II is an install-grade passive line array cabinet, so the real design question is whether its rated output and dispersion can hold usable SPL out to a 15 m listener while its narrow vertical pattern keeps the throw controlled.
Answer. At a 15 m listener position with the cabinet driven at 60% of its rated output, modelled SPL works out to approximately 94 dB. The 140 deg horizontal dispersion gives this cabinet a horizontal coverage radius of approximately 41.2 m at the -6 dB threshold.

How this preset reads — the engineering view.
The KV102 II is rated 120 dB SPL at 1 m. Sound pressure falls off with distance under the inverse-square relationship, so at 15 m and full rated output the model shows approximately 96 dB; backed off to a 60% drive level for headroom, that comes down to approximately 94 dB at the listener.
The cabinet's 140 deg x 7 deg (H x V) dispersion is asymmetric by design: the wide 140 deg horizontal spread is what produces the approximately 41.2 m horizontal coverage radius used in this preset, while the tight 7 deg vertical pattern keeps energy off the ceiling and floor, controlling throw down the room and reducing reflected sound. As a passive cabinet, the KV102 II needs a matched amplifier channel sized to its rated input; the planner does not select or size that amplifier.
Use the planner by dragging the listener distance and drive-level controls to see the SPL figure move in real time. The suggested cabinet count is a front-coverage estimate based on the horizontal dispersion angle and room width; SPL adequacy at the furthest listener is a separate check the planner runs alongside it, and both should read acceptable before treating a layout as workable.
The planner does not model room reverberation or RT60, coverage zoning across separate seating or lobby areas, subwoofer pairing for low-frequency extension, the mechanical rigging or flying of the array, or DSP/delay-line tuning between cabinets. Each of those is a separate design step that follows once the SPL and coverage basics for this cabinet are established.
What this preset deliberately does not solve
- SPL figures are a free-field inverse-square estimate at 1 m reference; real rooms add reflections and absorption that shift the result either way.
- Coverage radius describes the -6 dB horizontal pattern only; it does not account for obstructions, seating risers, or non-rectangular room shapes.
- Figures assume the cabinet is driven within its rated passive input; the planner does not verify amplifier match or cable loss.
How this preset differs from its siblings
Other install line array cabinets in the catalogue trade off rated SPL, horizontal spread, and vertical control differently, so their coverage radius and usable listening distance at a given drive level will not match this preset. This page exists because the KV102 II's specific combination of 120 dB @1 m rated output and a 140 deg x 7 deg dispersion produces its own SPL-versus-distance curve, which needs its own worked example rather than a generic line array default.
