K-array Firenze KH8 SPL & coverage

Problem. A touring line-array cabinet has to hold intelligible level across a large live-event floor without over-driving the box or leaving the back rows short. For a 40 x 25 m room, the real question is not just ”will it get loud enough” but whether the rated output and the 120 x 30 degree pattern still deliver usable SPL and width at the listener position that matters most.

Answer. At a 20 m listener position and 70% drive, the K-array Firenze KH8 delivers approximately 117 dB SPL, with roughly 119 dB available at full output from the same distance. Its 120 degree horizontal dispersion supports a -6 dB coverage radius of approximately 34.6 m, comfortably spanning the width of the 40 x 25 m room from a centred hang.

How this preset reads — the engineering view.

The Firenze KH8 is rated at 145 dB SPL at 1 m. Because sound pressure falls off with the inverse square of distance, that rating drops well before it reaches the crowd: at 20 m and full output the figure works out to approximately 119 dB, and at a more typical 70% drive level it settles to approximately 117 dB at the listener.

The 120 x 30 degree (H x V) dispersion pattern is what turns raw SPL into usable coverage. The wide 120 degree horizontal spread is what produces the approximately 34.6 m -6 dB coverage radius used in this preset, while the narrow 30 degree vertical pattern keeps energy focused on the audience plane rather than spilling onto the ceiling or rear wall, reducing reflected energy back into the room. The cabinet is self-powered, so the onboard amplification is already accounted for in the rated output figures.

The box-count readout is a front-coverage estimate based on the horizontal dispersion angle and room width; it is a separate calculation from SPL adequacy, so a layout can show enough boxes for width while still falling short on level, or vice versa, and both figures are worth checking together.

The planner does not model room reverberation or RT60, so a live, hard-surfaced hall will feel louder and less intelligible than the flat SPL number suggests. It does not zone coverage across distinct areas of an irregular room, it does not account for subwinter pairing or low-frequency extension, it leaves array mechanical rigging and safe working load out of scope, and it does not perform DSP delay or tuning calculations across multiple hangs.

What this preset deliberately does not solve

  • SPL figures are calculated from the rated 145 dB @ 1 m spec using inverse-square distance loss and linear drive scaling; they are not measured in-room and do not include air absorption, humidity, or audience absorption losses.
  • The 34.6 m coverage radius assumes a centred, unobstructed hang; asymmetric rooms, side walls, or off-axis listener positions will change the effective usable width.
  • This preset models a single cabinet position at one drive level; multi-box arrays, delay stacks, and frequency-dependent directivity are not represented.

How this preset differs from its siblings

Other touring line-array cabinets in the catalogue carry different rated SPL and dispersion figures, so the same 40 x 25 m room and 20 m listener distance will not produce the same coverage radius or output headroom. The Firenze KH8's 120 x 30 degree pattern and 145 dB @1 m rating are specific to this cabinet's format; a narrower-dispersion or lower-rated box would need its own preset to give a visitor an accurate, model-specific answer rather than a generic line-array estimate.
