K-array Tornado KT2: SPL & coverage at 6 m

Problem. A 20 x 12 m restaurant relying on background music needs the loudspeaker's rated output to translate into usable, even level at the listener's seat, not just at the cabinet face. For the Tornado KT2, a compact passive point-source box rated 100 dB SPL at 1 m, the real question is what level and coverage radius it actually delivers once distance and drive level are factored in.

Answer. At a 6 m listener distance and 50% drive, the Tornado KT2 delivers roughly 81 dB SPL, comfortably within background-music range for a 20 x 12 m restaurant floor. Its 90 x 90 degree dispersion pattern supports a horizontal coverage radius of about 6 m at the -6 dB point.

How this preset reads — the engineering view.

The Tornado KT2 is rated 100 dB SPL at 1 m, but SPL falls off with distance under the inverse-square relationship: at 6 m and full output, level drops to roughly 84 dB, and at 50% drive it settles near 81 dB at the listener position.

Its 90 degree x 90 degree (H x V) dispersion sets the practical horizontal coverage to around 6 m radius from a single cabinet. The wide, symmetric pattern favours even near-field fill over a compact floor area, which suits background-music use rather than long-throw projection. Being passive, the KT2 needs matched external amplification sized to the room rather than any onboard power stage.

The box-count estimate shown alongside is a front-coverage guide only; SPL adequacy at the listener's seat is a separate feasibility check and should be read on its own terms.

The planner does not model room reverberation or RT60, coverage zoning across multiple areas of a larger venue, subwoofer pairing for low-frequency extension, array mechanical rigging, or DSP and delay-line tuning between multiple cabinets. Treat its output as a first-pass coverage and SPL estimate, not a final acoustic design.

What this preset deliberately does not solve

  • Figures assume free-field inverse-square propagation and do not account for room reflections, absorption, or furnishings that alter real-world SPL.
  • The 6 m coverage radius reflects a single cabinet's -6 dB horizontal pattern; multi-speaker zoning and overlap are not modelled here.
  • Passive operation means actual output depends on the paired amplifier and cable run; the planner assumes the cabinet is driven within its rated input.

How this preset differs from its siblings

Other point-source options in the catalogue carry different rated SPL, dispersion angles, or active/passive formats, which shift both the coverage radius and the drive level needed to reach a given listener distance. The Tornado KT2's 90 x 90 degree pattern and 100 dB @1 m rating make it suited to compact, even-fill background zones rather than longer-throw or narrower-pattern applications, which is why its coverage numbers are presented on a dedicated preset rather than folded into a generic point-source example.
