Problem. A 40 × 25 m live-event space needs confirmed SPL at a 20 m listener position plus a defensible horizontal coverage figure before a touring line-array cabinet is committed to the rig plan.
Answer. At 70% drive the d&b audiotechnik V8 delivers roughly 116 dB SPL to a listener at 20 m, comfortably inside its 144 dB @1 m rating, with the 80° × 5° dispersion producing a horizontal coverage radius of about 16.8 m at −6 dB.

How this preset reads — the engineering view.
The V8 is rated 144 dB SPL at 1 m. SPL falls with distance under the inverse-square law, so that headline figure is a reference point, not a room figure. Run at full output, the same cabinet delivers approximately 118 dB at a 20 m listener; at the more typical 70% drive setting used in this preset, that comes down to approximately 116 dB — still well above the 90-plus dB headroom most live-event programme material asks for.
The 80° × 5° (H × V) dispersion is what sets the roughly 16.8 m horizontal coverage radius modelled here. The narrow 5° vertical pattern is deliberate: it keeps the wavefront off the ceiling and side walls, controlling throw depth and cutting the reflected energy that would otherwise smear intelligibility across a 40 × 25 m floor. As a passive cabinet, the V8 draws its output from matched external amplification — the planner's SPL model assumes that amplification is correctly sized and does not itself validate the amp-to-cabinet pairing.
Use the planner by dragging listener distance and drive level and watching the SPL readout move — that is the live feedback loop the tool is built for. Box count, separately, is a front-coverage area estimate (room footprint divided by per-cabinet horizontal reach); treat it as a starting point for how many cabinets a plan needs, and treat the SPL figure as the separate question of whether a given cabinet count and drive level are loud enough at the position that matters.
The planner does not model room reverberation or RT60 (a 40 × 25 m hall with hard surfaces will add reflected energy the free-field SPL figure above doesn't capture), does not zone SPL across different areas of an uneven floor plan, does not size or place subwoofers, does not account for array rigging geometry or splay angles, and does not run the DSP/delay tuning that a deployed touring array needs to align arrival times across the room. Each of those is a follow-on engineering step once the coverage triage here says the cabinet and count are in the right range.
What this preset deliberately does not solve
- SPL figures are free-field, inverse-square estimates — they exclude room reverberation, reflections and RT60, which will move real readings.
- Coverage radius describes horizontal reach on the −6 dB axis only; it is not a full polar or vertical-throw prediction.
- The planner treats box count and SPL adequacy as separate checks — a count that fills the floor area does not by itself confirm the SPL target is met at every listener position.
How this preset differs from its siblings
Other touring line-array options in this catalogue trade rated output, dispersion width and physical format differently — a wider horizontal pattern reaches a broader audience footprint per cabinet but at lower per-box SPL, while a narrower pattern concentrates output further but needs more boxes to cover the same width. The V8's 144 dB @1 m rating and 80° × 5° pattern sit at the touring-grade, high-headroom end of the range, which is why this preset exists on its own: the coverage arithmetic and SPL headroom for this cabinet are materially different from a compact install column or a wider-dispersion point-source box, even in an identical 40 × 25 m room.
