Optoma UHD55 throw distance & placement

Problem. The Optoma UHD55 is a native 3840x2160 home-cinema projector with a 1.21-1.59:1 zoom lens, so the real placement question is not ”will it fit” but ”how much room-layout freedom does the zoom actually buy back”. At a 120-inch 16:9 screen, the answer decides whether the projector sits on a rear shelf, a mid-room stand, or a ceiling mount closer to the screen.

Answer. For a 120-inch 16:9 screen (2.66 m wide), the Optoma UHD55 throws from 3.22 m to 4.23 m. That 1.01 m of latitude is enough to accommodate a shelf, a ceiling mount, or a rear-wall placement in most single or open-plan rooms without forcing a fixed distance.

How this preset reads — the engineering view.

The UHD55 uses a zoom lens (1.21-1.59:1), not a fixed-throw lens, which means the projector does not have to sit at one exact spot for a 120-inch image. Across that zoom range, distance can run 3.22 m to 4.23 m and the image still fills the same 120-inch screen; the room simply gets to choose where in that 1.01 m band the mounting point falls.

At 3600 lumens, the UHD55 is best suited to a room where ambient light can be controlled - blackout curtains, dimmable or no daylight spill, and dark-toned walls and ceiling. Combined with native 3840x2160 resolution, it is built for a dedicated or semi-dedicated home-cinema room rather than a bright living space. The lamp light source means a scheduled bulb replacement is part of the running cost, unlike laser or LED alternatives.

It does not account for screen-material gain, ambient-light rejection coatings, mount hardware or ceiling-drop offsets, lens shift (if fitted on a given unit), or the audio side of a home-cinema build. Those decisions sit alongside throw distance, not inside it.

What this preset deliberately does not solve

  • The 3.22-4.23 m range is specific to a 120-inch 16:9 screen; changing screen size shifts both ends of the band.
  • A lamp-based light source means brightness output and bulb life are maintenance items over the projector's service life, unlike laser sources.
  • 3600 lumens sets a real ceiling on tolerable ambient light; a room with uncontrolled daylight will wash out contrast regardless of correct throw placement.

How this preset differs from its siblings

Unlike fixed-throw home-cinema projectors, which demand one exact mounting distance for a given screen size, the UHD55's 1.21-1.59:1 zoom gives a distance band instead of a single figure - useful where the mounting point is constrained by furniture, joists, or an existing shelf rather than by the projector. Its throw ratio also sits in a shorter-throw part of the home-cinema range than long-throw zoom models, so it reaches a 120-inch image from a noticeably closer distance than projectors built for larger rooms. This page exists separately because that combination of throw ratio, lumen output, and lamp light source is specific to this model and does not carry over to other Optoma or competing home-cinema units.
