JVC DLA-NZ800 throw distance & placement, 120-inch screen

Problem. A dedicated cinema room built around the JVC DLA-NZ800 needs to know how much back-wall depth the projector actually demands before the screen size and seating layout are locked in. At a 120-inch 16:9 image, the placement question is whether the room's real-world depth falls inside the lens's working range or forces a compromise on screen size.

How this preset reads — the engineering view.

The DLA-NZ800 uses a zoom lens rather than a fixed-throw optic, and at a 120-inch 16:9 image that zoom spans 3.8 m to 7.77 m of throw distance. In practice this means the room dictates the mounting point rather than the other way round: a shorter room can sit the projector near 3.8 m and zoom in, a longer room can push it back toward 7.77 m and zoom out, and both land on the same 120-inch image without changing the screen.

2700 lumens on this model is calibrated for a fully light-controlled room rather than a bright living room — at 120 inches with a neutral-gain screen and the lights off, that output supports a proper cinema image with headroom for the laser light source's long-term brightness stability. Native 4096x2160 resolution means the panel is mapping true 4K content pixel-for-pixel rather than upscaling from a lower-resolution chip, which matters most on a screen this size viewed from typical seating distances. Together, the profile suits a dedicated, blacked-out screening room built for 4K/HDR source material, not a multi-purpose or ambient-lit space.

What this preset deliberately does not solve

  • 3.8-7.77 m assumes a 120-inch 16:9 screen; other aspect ratios or screen sizes shift both ends of the range.
  • 2700 lumens is a light-controlled-room figure — any ambient light or a low-gain screen will reduce perceived brightness and contrast.
  • Laser light source figures assume factory calibration; real-world brightness depends on installation, screen material and maintenance over the unit's service life.

How this preset differs from its siblings

Fixed-throw premium home cinema projectors give a single throw ratio and therefore one throw distance per screen size, leaving the room to accommodate the projector. The DLA-NZ800's 1.43-2.92:1 zoom range instead gives a placement window nearly double the width of a typical fixed-lens model, which is why this preset exists separately: the reader is checking whether a specific room depth falls inside a wide zoom range, not comparing a single fixed number against their wall.
