The decision: dedicated room or shared space, and to what standard

The first fork is whether this is a dedicated room or a living space that also plays films, and it is not a budget question — it is a physics question. A dedicated room can be treated, isolated and laid out for one seating position geometry. A shared living space cannot, and pretending otherwise produces a room where the speakers are correct and the result is not. Both are legitimate projects; conflating them is what produces disappointment.

The second decision is channel configuration and, more importantly, whether the room can actually support it. Height channels and wide surrounds need ceiling and wall geometry to place them where the format intends. A room whose beam layout or sloped ceiling prevents correct height-channel placement is better served by a well-executed simpler configuration than by a nominally higher specification with speakers in compromised positions.

The third is the projection or display decision — throw distance, screen gain, ambient-light rejection and viewing angle from the actual seats — and it is constrained by the room's dimensions rather than by the specification sheet. Seat geometry comes before equipment selection, always: the primary listening position determines where the speakers go, what the screen size can be, and how much acoustic treatment the room needs.

Acoustic targets, calibration and what 'reference' means

The measurable acoustic targets — CEDIA/CTA-RP22 is the reference frame for small-room cinema, and it is the one body this practice is entitled to cite — are what turn cinema design from taste into engineering. Reverberation time appropriate to the room volume, controlled early reflections at the listening positions, managed low-frequency modal behaviour, and a background noise level low enough that quiet passages are actually quiet. A room that meets those targets sounds good with modest equipment; a room that does not cannot be rescued by better speakers.

Room modes are the constraint that governs the plan. Every room's dimensions produce standing waves that reinforce some low frequencies and cancel others, and where those land relative to the seats determines whether the bass is even across the seating or excellent in one chair and absent in the next. Modal behaviour is addressed by proportion, by seat placement, by subwoofer position and count, and by low-frequency absorption. We work them in roughly that order because the first two cost nothing at plan stage — though it is a working order rather than a settled ranking, and in a retrofit, where proportion is fixed, multi-subwoofer placement becomes the strongest lever for seat-to-seat evenness.

Calibration then sets levels, distances, crossovers and equalisation against measurement rather than against preference, and it is the step that most installations either skip or perform from the equipment's automatic routine alone. A properly calibrated room is documented: the measurements, the settings and the reasoning are handed over, so a future engineer can see what was done and why.

What must be settled with the architect and interior designer

Room proportion is the earliest and highest-leverage decision, and it is available only while the plan is still moving. Certain length-to-width-to-height ratios distribute modal behaviour far more evenly than others, and choosing a good one costs nothing at plan stage; recovering it afterwards means false walls, which cost money and floor area.

Isolation is a construction decision, not a treatment decision. Whether the room needs to avoid disturbing the rest of the house — and whether the rest of the house needs to avoid disturbing the room — determines wall construction, floor treatment, door specification and how services penetrate the envelope. Every duct, conduit and pipe that crosses the boundary is a potential flanking path, and the time to deal with that is when the services are being routed.

Then the interior collaboration, which is where private cinemas succeed or fail aesthetically. Acoustic treatment can be beautiful or it can be visible foam, and the difference is whether the acoustician and the interior designer worked from the same drawing. Speaker positions, screen wall build-up, seating riser height and sightlines, equipment ventilation and lighting control all have to be resolved jointly. A riser designed without checking sightlines from the back row produces a second row watching the first row's heads.

What goes wrong in Guwahati cinema rooms

Humidity is the material problem in this climate. Acoustic absorbers, fabric finishes, timber diffusers and speaker cones all interact with persistent high humidity, and a sealed room that is not part of the conditioned envelope will develop odour, sag and — in the worst cases — mould behind fabric. The room's climate provision is an acoustic decision as much as a comfort one, and it must be designed alongside the isolation rather than punched through it afterwards.

That climate provision creates the second problem. Air conditioning introduces noise, and a cinema's background noise target is far below what a normal room tolerates. Duct velocity, grille selection, attenuation, unit location and the acoustic treatment of the penetration all have to be engineered — a standard split unit in a treated room raises the noise floor enough to erase the low-level detail the treatment was installed to reveal.

Power quality damages amplifiers, processors and projector lamps or light engines, and a cinema concentrates expensive, sensitive electronics in one rack. Conditioned supply is proportionate here.

The most frequent failure, though, is sequence. Rooms are built, decorated, furnished — and then acoustic treatment is proposed as a remedial exercise. At that point the options are limited to what can be surface-applied, the isolation opportunity has passed entirely, and the result is a compromise presented as a design. Acoustics belong in the first conversation, not the last.

What a comparable scope must state

  1. The acoustic targets in measurable terms — reverberation time band by band, background noise level, and the treatment intent — rather than a list of panels. Targets make two proposals comparable; a panel count does not.
  2. Room construction and isolation requirement, including wall and floor build-up, door specification and the treatment of every service penetration. The climate provision with its noise target stated, because that number is what forces the ducting to be engineered rather than routed.
  3. Channel configuration with speaker positions justified against the room geometry, subwoofer count and placement with the modal reasoning stated, and the screen and projection specification derived from throw distance and seating geometry.
  4. Seating layout with sightlines and riser dimensions, equipment rack location with ventilation and access, lighting control scope, and the calibration deliverable — measurements before and after, final settings, and the documentation handed over. Anything approaching a price belongs in a written estimate after a technical review, never in a public scope.

What 'done' means

Acoustic measurement of the finished room against the stated targets, documented — not a demonstration that it sounds good, but a measurement that shows it meets the numbers the design promised. Where a target is missed, the honest deliverable says so and says what would close the gap.

Calibration performed and documented: levels, distances, crossovers and equalisation set against measurement, with the before-and-after data and the reasoning handed over. Background noise measured with the climate system running, because measuring it switched off measures a room nobody will ever use.

Handover carries the measurement set, the calibration record, the as-built layout, the configuration files and a walkthrough with the household.
