/ The archetype

What this archetype is

The command-and-control archetype is the operations centre — a security operations centre, a building-management centre, a logistics control centre. Video-wall AV with multi-source routing. VMS feeds from across the site or city. BMS dashboards. Access-control event streams. Communications stack (radio, telephony, paging). Mission-critical UPS+BESS with DG. The room operates 24/7 and the operator's workflow is the primary engineering input — display ergonomics, alarm prioritisation, escalation paths, shift-handover documentation.

Interoperability concerns

  • Multi-source video-wall routing without latency cascades
  • Alarm aggregation across BMS, CCTV, access, fire — prioritised display
  • Communications stack interoperability across radio + telephony + paging

Lifecycle realities

  • Video-wall LED refresh 5-7 years (faster than projection)
  • Console furniture 10-15 years; ergonomic refresh on staff health metrics
  • VMS feeds proliferate; storage and processing scale with feed count

Maintenance realities

  • Daily: video-wall health, VMS feed audit, comms stack test
  • Weekly: UPS+BESS health, DG load test
  • Monthly: alarm-prioritisation review with operations supervisor
  • Quarterly: full failover test (UPS, DG, VMS, network)
  • Annual: ergonomic audit, refresh planning

Operational realities

  • Operator fatigue is operational risk; ergonomics matter
  • Shift handover documentation lives in the runbook
  • Alarm-prioritisation review is the difference between useful and noise

Deployment constraints

  • 24/7 operation — phased works only, with operational continuity plans
  • Display calibration sensitive to ambient lighting; specify at design
  • Ergonomic furniture and acoustic treatment coordinated with FM and operators

Scaling realities

  • New feeds extend VMS and video-wall capacity
  • Operator stations modular — add by team expansion
  • Mission-critical UPS+BESS sized for the largest planned configuration

/ Commissioning

Commissioning pattern · 4 phases

  1. Phase 1

Phase 1: power resilience (UPS+BESS+DG) verified under load

  2. Phase 2

Phase 2: video-wall and source routing

  3. Phase 3

Phase 3: VMS feeds and alarm aggregation

  4. Phase 4

Phase 4: live operations with shift dry-run
