Problem. The right question is not just how large a single camera's footage is, but how the count of cameras, the retention window and the recording schedule compound into a head-end and drive plan.

Answer. At 16 cameras recording continuously (24/7) with 30-day retention, this camera's H.265+ stream works out to roughly 41 TB of storage, or about 86 GB per camera per day. At that camera count the architecture sits comfortably in the Entry NVR class.

How this preset reads — the engineering view.

The DS-2CD2143G2-I records 4MP video at a typical 8 Mbps using H.265+, and that bitrate is the single biggest driver of storage in this preset: it works out to roughly 86 GB per camera per day of continuous recording. H.265+ is a smart, motion-aware variant of H.265 that further compresses static scene content beyond plain H.264, so the same 4MP image costs meaningfully less storage per day than an equivalent H.264 stream would.

Storage scales in a straight line from there: 16 cameras across 30 days of continuous recording lands at roughly 41 TB. Double the retention to 60 days and the figure roughly doubles too; add cameras and it scales the same way per camera. At 16 cameras and this retention window, the resulting head-end sits in the Entry NVR class rather than a mid-tier or enterprise recorder tier.

The calculator does not decide the real-world bitrate variance that comes from actual scene activity (motion, lighting, clutter can push bitrate above or below the 8 Mbps average), any RAID or redundancy overhead on the storage array, whether footage is mirrored to a separate failover or archive tier, or whether the network and recorder can sustain the required write throughput. Those decisions sit with the recorder and storage design, not with this estimate.

What this preset deliberately does not solve

  • The 8 Mbps figure is a scene-average bitrate for this codec and resolution; sustained high-motion scenes can push actual usage higher than the estimate.
  • The 41 TB figure assumes continuous 24/7 recording; switching to a motion-only or scheduled recording profile reduces the effective storage materially.
  • The estimate is raw capacity only and does not add RAID, redundancy or archive-tier overhead, which increases the physical drive capacity needed beyond the raw figure shown.

How this preset differs from its siblings

The DS-2CD2143G2-I's 4MP sensor and 8 Mbps H.265+ average bitrate give it a different per-camera daily footprint than lower-resolution (2MP) or higher-resolution (8MP) cameras in the catalog, so a fleet built on this model will land on a different storage total and a different NVR class than the same camera count on another model.
